mise en scène is a method of giving the audience a sense of what the purpose of a location is for by arranging props and scenery.
Very strange example, but a wine cellar is a good example, its a cellar with racks of wine, I don’t see how you could mistake this for anything else.
An image with no mise en scène used may be found confusing and the audience could have a hard time understanding what’s going on in the scene. Lets test this, see if you can figure out what’s happening in the following image;

Now to the average normie this photo is just three weird men shaking hands, perhaps over a friendly game of golf. No, in actuality those three men are Winston Churchill, Harry Truman and Joseph Stalin. This photo was taken I presume after the Potsdam conference but there is no context so without a decent understanding of history this image would mean nothing to you. Now maybe if they were holding up a board that reads “#Potsdamconference1945” they wouldn’t fall victim to my example, but here we are.
